Youth Summer Service Project 2009

"Let the Spirit Take You There"

dfgadjfglkajglkjadfg
Eight Junior High youth and nine Senior High youth (scroll down) spent a week of their summer volunteering through Sierra Service Project in South Central Los Angeles and at the Roundvalley Indian Reservation in Covelo, California.

We would like to express our appreciation to our church family for their support in making these trips possible.  We are already anticipating new year's mission trip destinations, knowing it is the Spirit that takes us there!

Junior High

It was a first time event for the Junior High group who worked at Roundvalley and they spent most of their time painting, building a wheelchair ramp, and learning how to rip out and lay a new floor.  Besides working everyday, they made new friends and learned about the seven Indian tribes that live in Covelo.  Evenings were spent making s'mores, singing, dancing, and rejoicing in the Lord.

Senior High

Two weeks after the Junior High, the Senior High took off to do mission in South Central Los Angeles.  They joined five other churches and worked on low income homes; painting, building, and repairing existing projects.   In addition, the youth were all actively involved in serving at local food banks or kitchens, or assisting at women's shelters and daycare centers. Their mission included preparing over 300 lunches to hand out to the homeless in Skid Row.

Reflections on Mission

"On Skid Row after we handed out the lunches a man came over to me and asked if there were any lunches left, with a broken heart I said "no." Even though he didn't get a lunch he said with a smile on his face "that's alright there is always tomorrow."  ~Kiana Hargreaves

"Through this and seeing the hardships that some people had to go through, I became closer to God.  It made me realize how lucky I am today.  Going to Los Angeles was one of the most poignant experiences I have ever had." ~Sarah Cornett
